Tunisia Shows Importance of Single Actions

Gandhi was just one person who lead millions of Indians. From that one man came the thought — non-violence and peace, even when being killed — that led to the creation of the world’s biggest democracy, and the West’s best chance of have a friend that can block the incredible development of China. Of course India has a long way to go, and poverty is still at incredible levels in many parts of the countryside, but it seems that Gandhi has proved incredibly influential. We are constantly reminded of the importance of one person. Despite the cyncism about the voter’s role in elections, what with all the elites wielding so much power, it seems like civic action just doesn’t hold much sway any more. Unlike in the time of Martin Luther King Jr, some people would say, an individual just can’t make a difference anymore.
But I must say that I completely disagree with this stupid line of thinking. First of all, it’s always single people who make the decision that leads to every successful political action. It just takes a certain type of person willing to make a huge sacrifice in order for something good to be produced. Some do it with time — after all, creating a chest of drawers must be done with the help of a single person — but some people do it with their lives, like the Tunisian man who set himself on fire, leading to a revolution. Without this man it wouldn’t have happened. People make a difference.
