Yoke of imperialist oppression

There seems to be a recurring joke I encounter wherever I am in the world that the only two words spoken by ever man on earth are “coca” and “cola”. This seems to be exactly what has gone on over the last fifty years – the slow oppression of people beyond one’s own borders, just like the Empires of old. The streets of Marrakech are unavoidably tarnished by the relentless march of American imperialism. The road leading to Tunis carries adverts for American cars and American computers. All over the Horn of Africa, people are buying in to American values on the basis of American TV programmes. America might be suffering from the recession more acutely than anywhere else in the world, but even This Economic Climate can’t stop its influence from spreading all over the planet we call home.
Back in Blighty, I keep seeing “McDonalds – 300 metres – 5 minutes” signs on tube stations. American in terms of what it advertises and the length of time it expects you to walk the distance. I’ve seen ads for American car insurance, and I hear people say things like “like”.
I don’t know if this is a bad thing. The British Empire was a brutal and influential regime which brought oppression and prosperity to people all over the world. We instilled our values, beliefs, religion, language, science, taste and technology in places where it wasn’t particularly welcome. Perhaps this is what America is doing now, minus the silly hats and incredible moustaches.
